(Night Anglers require a Season Permit)
| MIDDLE
LEVEL
A reed lined man made drain cutting across the Fens from St Germans to Three Holes. Offering good access and good banks at St Marys, Peters, Magdalen High Road, Mortons, Crooked Chimney, Pingle and Three Holes bridges. Access has been improved recently on the popular sections. Other areas offer peace and solitude for the nomadic angler, lots of space and fish for all. Very productive in 1997 with activity all season. Fishes best with a wind and movement on the water. Often Pole dominated which means the Bream remain unmolested. Here again Tench provided some exciting sport especially at St Marys & Pingle. Chopped worm a good method for Specimen Perch & Tincas. Bream from the far bank where they can be taken from the shoal with fewer disturbances. Pike to 28lb. often on the calmest days. Some comfortable areas for night fishing for both bream and Zander. CUT OFF CHANNEL A tranquil tree lined quite picturesque channel with both busy and peaceful areas. Can cope with high water levels Another venue targeted for improvements. Reborn in 2000 with anglers flocking to the venue in Autumn & Winter, after a time in the doldrums. All methods popular although many anglers use whip or waggler. Hemp scoring well for the better roach even in winter. Chopped worm for good perch & tench. Home to good shoals of bream at Crossways and Denver NEW POPHAMS EAU 3.5Kms of water connecting the Middle Level at Three holes with the Old Nene. Shallower than the Level contains a good head of small fish. waggler and Pole the most successful methods. A vastly underused water. FOSTERS END PIT, BLACKBOROUGH. (No day Tickets) Mature gravel pits varying in size. Not for the faint hearted. Recent landscaping carried out in the 2001 off season will make the venue much more accessable Time & effort will be rewarded, rather than an occasional visit. Feeder or slider popular methods, Polaris float methods works well in the deep water. Bream, Tench, roach, carp, perch & pike the quarry, with some big fish in residence. Boilies often catch the bream. U PITS, TOTTENHILL (No day Tickets) Mature gravel pit of some 2.5 acres. Restocked with 3000 carp in 1999. This small self contained complex owned by the Association for over 50 years has recently being the target of an joint EA and Association management re-stocking program. Carp and Tench showed well in the 2001 season, with Junior pleasure matches rewarding. This is an extremely good venue for the first time angler, with good swims and conformable pegs. Please note that no access is allowed before 05:45 AM and all cars should be parked on the common adjacent to the telephone box. |

| RIVER
GREAT OUSE
6 Kms of mature deep slow flowing river, varying in depth from 9-20ft. Excess water and colour a problem in winter, but less susceptible to the cold. A very attractive and popular venue attracting numerous visitors. A venue once mastered that will always be enjoyed. Received rave reviews from former World Champion Alan Scotthorne recently. Planned bank & swim clearing should increase the popularity of the venue. Easy access from an adjacent road. Fished well from day one last season with an abundance of skimmers & roach, but don’t always expect a sailaway bite. Bream can be found at the Wissey mouth, Chapel & The Owl box whilst the numbers of Tench caught will surprise many. Perch to chopped worm using pole or feeder provide good sport on harder days. Pole, Feeder, waggler or Slider all proven methods, the bolognese method a useful alternative. Small bites on the tip can be the big one, moving the bait often encourage's bites. Groundbaiting popular, possibly a necessity, binder or heavy mix required to ensure crumb reaches the riverbed. As with most waters mentioned there is ample water to try a variety of methods without compromising all your peg. GREAT OUSE RELIEF CHANNEL 15Kms of Waterway from Saddlebow to Denver, did the record Zander emerge from its depths. Best Banks at Stow, Saddlebow & Magdalen which all proved popular and successful at various times. Quality hybrids (from 2 to 4lbs) and Roach ( often up to 2lb) well worth the effort. Rudd appearing at Saddlebow & St Germans. Pole, Waggler and Feeder all having their day. Many locals use extra long wagglers to combat the surface skim, with long float rods popular. The better fish especially the Bream showing on the windiest of days. 3 or 4 maggots on a sizeable hook more likely to produce action rather than too much finesse. The venue can be challenging especially on inclement days but the rewards are there. RIVER WISSEY 5Kms of a small flowing river available, access centred round the village of Hilgay. Recent bank improvements have made the venue more accessible.Best fished in winter where the shoals of roach and dace respond to waggler, pole and whip fishing using maggot, hemp or bread. Hemp and tares accounting for specimens even on cold days. Chub often downstream of the A10. A venue also for anglers who like to travel light and stalk the river for both roach and pike. |
